Lampwork Beads, also known as flameworked beads, are made by melting the end of a glass rod in a hot flame and touching it to a thin metal mandrel. Artists spin the mandrel in the flame to wind the hot glass around it, then pull the glass rod away. Next they shape the bead using special tools and release the resulting bead from the mandrel only after the glass is properly cooled or annealed.
